All direct-current motors must have two core elements: a stator and a rotor (armature), although critical functions can be performed by other components as well. A brushed DC motor comprises the following units:

PWM stands for Pulse Width Modulation. It basically describes the type of the digital signal. PWM technique is an excellent technique to control the analog circuits with microcontroller's digital PWM output. In this technique we can get analog results with the digital means.

The resistors can be any value but getting the exact speed needed from the motor requires testing with a certain range of resistors. The values of the resistors add up linearly so it is easy to calculate how to increase or decrease the motors speed by simply adding the values together. For example, two 1kΩ resistors wired together will act the same as a 2kΩ resistor.

Applying current when the rotor position is unknown may cause the rotor to turn in the wrong direction. The use of sensors prevents this problem.

There will always be a moment when all the transistors are open. It may lead to voltage and power loss, or even short-out if the opposite upper and lower switches are in the on position.
